What is PCOS?
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal condition in which the ovaries do not release an egg regularly. It is one of the most common hormonal problems in women of reproductive age. In India, the terms PCOS and PCOD are often used for the same condition.
Common signs
- Irregular, delayed or missed periods
- Weight gain, especially around the waist, and difficulty losing weight
- Acne and oily skin
- Extra hair on the face, chest or abdomen
- Thinning of hair on the scalp
- Difficulty getting pregnant
Not every woman has all of these. Some women have only irregular periods.
How PCOS is diagnosed
Diagnosis is based on your symptoms and examination, along with blood tests for hormones, thyroid and blood sugar, and an ultrasound of the ovaries where needed. Other causes of irregular periods are ruled out first.
How it is treated
Treatment depends on what matters most to you: regular periods, clearer skin, weight control or pregnancy. Dr. Surabhi looks at your diet, sleep, stress and activity alongside medical treatment.
- Lifestyle changes: for women who are overweight, losing even 5 to 10 percent of body weight often brings periods back to a regular pattern.
- Regulating periods and correcting hormonal imbalance.
- Managing symptoms such as acne and excess hair.
- Support for conception when you are planning a pregnancy.
Why follow-up matters
PCOS raises the long-term risk of diabetes, high cholesterol and thickening of the womb lining. Regular follow-up lets these be checked early, even when your periods are back to normal.
